Dearest Heavenly Father,
We humbly come before you to ask for your wisdom, patience, and guidance. I beg your forgiveness of my sins and ask for your continued mercy. It is only the sacrifice of your son, Jesus, that I am even able to commune with you. I thank you for that sacrifice.
Welcome to ReCreate Ministry. Our mission is making and growing authentic followers of Christ. How do we battle depression in a biblical manner? What is depression and why does it affect us so much? These are just a few of the questions that came into my mind when I started writing this. While the bible doesn’t specifically mention depression. It does however give several examples of how to deal with emotions that come with depression. Sadness, sleeplessness, hopelessness, and pain. The amazing thing is these are all factors that take place in the battle with depression. However, how do we use some of the solutions provided by the world when the world will also give us these problems? I hope and pray some of the things I say will provide some help.
Psalms 146:3 (NLT) states “Put not your trust in princes, in mortal man, who cannot save.”
The first thing I want to establish is a clear definition of depression, its symptoms, and possible causes (in regards to my experiences). It is important to differentiate between feeling depressed and suffering from depression. Every single man and woman, rich and poor, young and old will more than likely feel depressed from time to time. But, that is very different from suffering from depression. The behavioral disorder known as depression needs to be diagnosed by a professional. Either a doctor, psychiatrist, or licensed therapist will have the skills necessary to provide that diagnosis. People who feel depressed, will have trouble sleeping, and feel sad for a short period of time. On the other hand people who suffer from depression will feel these same emotions over an extended amount of time(more than 2 months), it is also a very cyclical issue. Those individuals will feel good for a period of time but the emotions that come with depression will return in time. Dealing with depression takes a great deal of focus, patience, and faith.
One of the biggest misconceptions about dealing with depression is medication. There is a growing number of people who religiously believe that medicine will fix your depression. That is not true in any way shape or form. Like a Band-Aid, depression medicine will help with your symptoms so you can deal with the underlying cause of those emotions. Matthew 4:4 (NLT) says “But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” You cannot rely solely on anything this world can give you. However, I believe God will use everything to his plan. Therefore, anything created by this world can be used by God to help you. The medicine that has been developed can be used to help, but only if you seek his help as well. Several years ago I almost lost my battle with depression, I attempted to commit suicide. After that event I prayed to God, and was led to check in to a local hospital to get some help. That help wasn’t working until one night I was reading my bible in my room. I remember feeling bone chillingly cold. I began to weep, uncontrollably, and I began to pray. I finally got to a point in which I had given my pain to God. In that moment, I felt extremely hot, and I was sweating profusely. For the first time in probably 20 years I finally felt that pain I was carrying lift off of me. I am a walking advertisement on the importance that with the help of my doctor, therapist, medicine, and most importantly God I was finally on the road to recovery. Now, to this day I still struggle with it, but with my faith in Him, I know that I can get through any crisis.
I want to end this with some hope. If you are feeling depressed, or if you have been diagnosed with depression. There is hope!!! That hope is everywhere around you. As I said before, God can and will use all the things of this world to his will. He will move mountains for us, but he asks us to have the faith and courage to walk to the foot of that mountain. I beg of anyone who reads this, do not give up!!! He has a plan to use whatever pain you are feeling to improve your life. He wants to, and will remove any pain you are feeling. But you must give that pain to him, even if you have to do it multiple times a day for weeks, months or years. There will be a day when you never have to feel the weight of that pain again. As your brother in Christ, I am here for you if you need it. I will be praying for all of you!!!
